What is Crossfit

What is Crossfit? One of the questions I hear the most in life, so I decided I'd explain it to any and everyone who reads my blog. Crossfit is constantly varied functional movements preformed at a high intensity. So what does that mean? Well lets break it down. First constantly varied means that we always are changing up what we are doing in our workouts, so we wont be doing the same thing on any given day, we could do 100 pull ups one day, 400 pound back squat the next, and then after go run a 5k. The reason we emphasize this is because just like crossfit, you never know what life is going to throw at you so we need to be prepared for anything! Next, Functional movement is any movement  that is going to benefit you in everyday life, this can consist of anything from squats to pull ups, all of these target specific places on our body that we use constantly everyday. Another way that we like to judge the movements that we use in our workouts is the acronym L.L.L.D.Q. which means large loads long distance quickly. So taking a bar from the floor to overhead in a swift fluid movement like snatch is a perfect example of this, while something like a bicep curl isn't what we would consider a functional movement. Although some guys can bicep curl a lot of weight, the bar is only going a total of 2 feet at most, and it isn't very quick...and usually involves a lot of grunting and staring at yourself in the mirror. Finally, High Intesity is relative to each person who walks into the gym, we are going to push you as hard as you can go! We aren't going to degrade you or look down on you at any skill level, we just want to push you through barriers! Another thing I hear a lot is that crossfit isn't for me? To this I ask, Why not? No matter who you are, what you do, your athletic background, or goals in fitness crossfit has something for you. The beauty of Crossfit is that it can be scaled to anyone, if you cant do a pull up we can scale it. If you cant do the lift we are doing in the WOD we will hand you a PVC pipe and coach you through the form! The final thing I want to add is that Crossfit is the greatest way to stay motivated in your workouts, the affiliate that you are at is full of people who are working toward the same goals, we all want to make ourselves a better version of our self. We will encourage you to continue on your journey. Plus there are coaches there who have been trained to  guide you down the road in your crossfit endeavors. And thats my soap box about crossfit, hope you enjoy it.

About me

My name is Caleb Burchfield, I am an avid crossfitter and health nut. But I wasn't always this way, I was a normal kid through elementary school, a little on the small side, but nothing to be alarmed about. Then came middle school, most people had hit their growth spurts by now, strange things are starting to happen to their bodies, but not me, nope I'm still walking around at a massive 5'1, and weighing in at a bulky 75 pounds. This was a problem for me, and on top of that I was quite possibly the most socially awkward kid on the planet, this led to a couple of rough years, getting swirly's, books thrown around campus stuff getting stolen from me. Cuz hey what was I gonna do about it, I couldn't stand my ground against your average honey bee. Add on top of that being made fun of by literally everyone in your class and it makes for a great time. Luckily middle school was only 2 years of my life. In high school I was fed up with all the crap I was having dumped on me, so I was going to join the football team, maybe I would toughen up a bit, and trust me I did. I hit my growth spurt finally as well, from 8th grade to Sophomore year I grew from 5'1 to 6'0. I eventually began to make some friends as well, things were getting alot better for me. I began working out religiously, I had a football coach who saw the potential in me, his name was Jonathan Loudermilk, and I am beyond grateful for the time he invested in me, he is the man I credit most for turning me into who I am today! He took me and a small group of football players and showed us what hard work in the weight room can do for you. he always said "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard!" naturally I latched onto these words. This is what drove me
all through High School to out work the guy next to me. Through all this hard work I became one of the strongest players on the team and a real threat on the field. I enjoyed every second I had on the field and really wish I could suit up in those stinky pads one more time. But all good things must come to an end, and they usually open the door to new opportunities. After High School I was in need of some way to stay in shape and keep me competitive, so naturally I was drawn to the crossfit lifestyle, you do insanely tough workouts and you get to compete with people in your gym, your community and around the world!!! Needless to say I was hooked. Now I am a Level 1 certified coach and I am training at Crossfit Bravery, I love my job!
